The check engine light in BMW’s is designed to let you know that something is not right and needs attention. Even though it can be a really simple issue that can be fixed easily, it’s always best to take precaution and find out exactly what is causing the light to go on.
It’s always a good idea to visit a BMW specialist to make sure you’re not putting your vehicles health at risk by not looking into the matter.
We’ve put together a few common causes of a check engine light turning on.
You may notice when these are failing as you will feel a jolt when accelerating. Your spark plugs /wires ignite the fuel and air combination in the combustion chambers of your vehicle, so if not replaced, you will experience reduced power when driving and it can cause clogged catalytic converters and damage the ignition coils.
Always check your gas cap is secured on correctly, as that can also cause your check engine light to turn on. If it is not sealed tightly, fuel can be lost through evaporation and release into the atmosphere. This can be a simple, do-it-yourself fix if noticed.
It is important to fix a faulty catalytic converter, as this is what turns carbon dioxide into less harmful emissions. If you keep up with your BMW’s maintenance schedule, it should keep this part from failing but if a problem does arise, you need to get it checked as soon as possible.
Your mass airflow sensor calculates the amount of air entering the engine to measure how much fuel is needed to run your engine. It’s recommended to repair the air filter at least once a year to prevent the airflow sensor from failing.
Your oxygen sensor keeps a record of the amount of unburned oxygen in your exhaust system. If there is a problem with this, it could impact your catalytic converter and your engine will burn more fuel than needed.
