DIY tips for looking after your car this autumn!

During this time of the year, the majority of the population will be ditching the idea of walking to work and opting for a warmer alternative.

However, there’s no hiding from the harsh winter environments, as they are likely to have an adverse effect on the performance of your vehicle, if not serviced correctly.

Some seasonal car maintenance will require a specialist or a car mechanic to oversee, but there are some simple DIY projects you can do to make sure you’re not the one left stranded outside in the cold, with an expensive bill for emergency repairs.

Tires and brakes

• Check the tire pressure as this can decrease when the temperature drops
• Invest in snow tires if you live in an area that sees significant amounts of wintry precipitation.
• Check tire tread depth complies with legal requirements. If your tread depth is less than 2/32 inch, it’s time to replace your tires.

Heating, Wipers, and lights

• Replace worn wipers to keep your windshield clear and safe
• Check to see all exterior and interior lights and headlights are properly working.
• Check the heating and defroster is working as this helps clear away the fog from the glass to increase visibility.

Gas, oil, and fluids

• Check your oil levels to keep your car running efficiently
• Keep your gas tank at least half full throughout winter to prevent accumulated water from freezing inside your fuel pump.
• Top up your windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze fluids. If you take your car to your local dealership, the mechanics can check this for you.

System check

• Have your battery and charging system checked as cold weather can often weaken the battery, especially if the car has not been used in awhile.
• Check the exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks, which are especially common in the cold weather.

Pack an emergency survival kit

Create a winter emergency kit, which can include an ice scraper, extra gloves, flashlight, blanket and basic tools.
